A Guide to Stargazing in Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree is one of the best places to experience the night sky because the desert has much less light pollution than most cities. On a clear night, visitors may be able to see thousands of stars, constellations, planets, and even the Milky Way.

For the best experience, it helps to plan ahead. Darker nights usually give you a better view, especially when the moon is not very bright. Visitors should also bring warm clothing because desert temperatures can drop quickly after sunset. A chair or blanket can make it more comfortable to sit outside and enjoy the view.

Joshua Tree National Park has several areas that are good for stargazing, including Hidden Valley, Quail Springs, Cap Rock, and Ryan Mountain. The park recommends using red lights instead of bright white flashlights so your eyes can adjust to the darkness more easily.
